Does Your IT Advisor Understand Your Business?
You can get involved with a number of different outside advisors covering a wide range of areas, production, financial, marketing, development, just to name a few. There’s one area though in particular where it can really make a difference if they understand your business. That’s because this area touches on all parts of the company and over the past decade has become even more entrenched in how a business operates.
What is that area? Technology. Do your outside advisors or your IT department inside really understand your business? Ask yourself some of the following:
1. Do they understand what’s involved for you to produce your product or service?
2. Do they understand what it takes to process your customer orders? What is it like from the customer side as well?
3. What kind of sales and marketing activities need to take place to generate this business?
4. What are the information needs of the various parts of your business?
5. How is the money really made in your particular business?
6. What sets you apart from the competition? What role does technology play as a competitive edge? How has the internet changed some of the technology dynamics in your industry?
Consider whether your technology department, whether internal or outside advisors, have this sort of handle. It can offer a lot of benefits. The better they understand how your company operates, the better they can make sure that technology fits your company, they can make sure you major in the right things in technology and let minor things be treated as minor issues. They can have a better sense on where the top priorities are for developmental projects. They can understand where technology could give your company a boost and where it just might not be worthwhile.
So make sure your technology side really understands what’s going on with the business both externally and internally. It can pay you huge dividends in making sure you get the best use of your technology resources.
